Shopify, E-Commerce & More
Introduction
Following on from choosing the e-commerce role over the traditional college route, this post is a first look at what that’s actually meant day to day - starting with Shopify and the wider world of e-commerce.
Getting Hands-On with Shopify
Shopify has been the main platform I’ve been learning through this role - from product listings and collections to the storefront theme and how the storefront connects to the backend. Coming from mostly self-taught HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, seeing how a production e-commerce platform structures all of this has been a genuinely useful step up.
Some of the areas I’ve been getting into:
- Store setup and management - products, collections, and inventory
- Storefront customisation - working with themes and layout
- Orders and customers - how a live store actually operates day to day
- The bigger picture - how design, development, and business decisions all connect on an e-commerce site
Why This Fits My Wider Goals
This role ties together a few different threads I’ve been building on this site: front-end development fundamentals, an interest in building real products rather than just following tutorials, and now a much clearer picture of how e-commerce businesses actually work behind the scenes. It’s practical experience I can bring directly into future web development and freelance work.
What’s Next
I plan to keep documenting what I learn here as I go deeper into Shopify and e-commerce more broadly, and to start applying some of it to my own concept projects - including the coffeeshop concept site already on my portfolio.
Conclusion
A few weeks into this role, Shopify and e-commerce have already given me a much clearer, more practical view of web development than I had before. I’ll keep this space updated as the “and more” part of the title starts to take shape.
