Starting a Short Course in Cyber Security
Why Cybersecurity?
After officially dropping out of university, I decided to use this time productively to learn the fundamental skills I need to update my CV in 2026. My goal is to gain qualifications that are more aligned with today’s standards in the tech sector.
I believe this cybersecurity course will provide me with the foundational theory and practical skills needed in the industry. It will also help kickstart my CV alongside the other online certifications I am currently planning to complete.
What Will I Be Learning?
The course is delivered entirely online. The curriculum is accessible through an online learning platform, and our live classes are conducted via Zoom.
Some of the key topics include:
- Fundamentals – Core principles and fundamental skills
- Network Security & Infrastructure
- Ethical Hacking & Pentesting Techniques
- Career Development - enhancing my portfolio website to showcase skills learnt through study, and hands-on training using SOC simulation and offensive simulation exercises to practice core skills seen within the industry
There is a lot more covered in the curriculum, and I will be keeping this blog updated with my progress as I move through the material and what I’ve learnt, showcasing skills through write-ups, projects, and blog posts.
What Are My Aims Over the 12-Week Short Course?
My main goals for this project are:
- Understanding the fundamentals – Refreshing and understanding core fundamental computing and cybersecurity knowledge
- Mastering new software – Getting hands-on experience with new tools and software using virtual machines and other tools that I used to find challenging to adapt to, or have never had prior experience with
- Employment – Leveraging this initial certification to showcase my skills and secure an entry-level role in the field
Conclusion
I am really looking forward to starting this short course and building a strong, broad skill set that will help me excel and land my desired job. I plan to update this blog throughout my studies and continuous self-learning as I progress through different units, to showcase what I have learned and how these skills can be practically applied within the industry.
