Planning My Home Lab on a Budget with No Experience
Introduction
This post is a working plan for building a home lab from scratch on a tight budget and with no prior experience. I want a practical space where I can learn networking, server management, and basic automation without spending a lot of money doing it.
What I Want to Build
- A small home lab setup for learning and experimentation
- Basic networking with a router, switch, and a mix of wired and wireless devices
- One or more inexpensive machines for running Linux, containers, and small services
- A simple backup strategy, and an easy way to restore the system if something breaks
Budget and Hardware
The plan is to keep the initial cost as low as possible by using second-hand equipment or repurposing older devices I already have, rather than buying anything new up front. Possible hardware includes:
- An old PC or laptop as the core lab machine
- A low-cost or managed switch for networking
- A Raspberry Pi for lightweight services or monitoring, tying in with my Raspberry Pi projects
- Existing routers and cabling already available at home
If none of that covers what I need, second-hand marketplaces are the next step before anything gets bought new.
Skill Goals
My main learning goals for this project are:
- Understanding local networking and IP management properly, not just in theory
- Installing and managing Linux on a lab machine
- Running containers or virtual machines for small projects
- Creating a safe, isolated environment for testing, separate from anything that actually matters
How This Fits the Rest of My Work
This sits alongside my cyber security study rather than apart from it: a lab environment is where the NCFE and Cisco Academy theory actually gets tested against something real, safely and on hardware I already own.

- Research affordable hardware options and check what’s already sat unused at home
- Put together a basic parts list for the lab
- Choose the first service or project to run on it
- Document the build process step by step as I go, so this page can grow into a proper write-up
